Obituary for Dr. Paul Overhulse

Dr. Paul R. Overhulse, 95, beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather, passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2017, at Brookdale Senior Living Community in Bowling Green, Ohio. Born in Hamler, Ohio, on June 26, 1922, he was the son of Glen and Esther Overhulse. After graduating from Hamler High School in 1940, he briefly attended Miami University before transferring to Harvard in 1941. His studies were interrupted when he entered military service in 1942, where he served for three years as a staff sergeant in the Army Signal Corps. Upon his discharge, he returned to Harvard to complete his BA in pre-med in 1947, and then proceeded to Johns Hopkins University, where he earned his MD in1951. On May 10, 1944, he married Mary Elizabeth Martin (“Betty”), with whom he shared almost sixty years of marriage and had four children. He settled his family in Bowling Green where he practiced general surgery for more than thirty years before his retirement in 1992.

Dr. Overhulse was an avid supporter of BGSU Falcons football and basketball teams, as well as the Detroit Tigers. In 1972, he obtained his pilot’s license and a single engine airplane, which enabled him to fly his wife, and most frequently, his daughter Marilyn all over the United States, from Boston to Reno to San Diego to Houston to Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. By all accounts he was an “old school doctor”-- his practice was guided by the needs of his patients, not by their ability to pay.

Dr. Overhulse was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, his son, Glenn, his parents, and his sister, Wilma Ann; he is survived by his children: Kathy Overhulse Smith (Ray) of Bloomington, Indiana; Lois Overhulse Niezgoda of Houston, Texas; Marilyn Overhulse Crabill (Eric) of Columbus, Ohio, and Carolyn Gatte Overhulse of Bowling Green, Ohio. Also surviving him are his sister, Donna Mae Overhulse Witte (Lou) of Bryan, Ohio, six grandchildren (Matthew, Paul, Justin, Grant, Paige, and Cailyn), and five great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff at Brookdale Bowling Green, Dr. Thomas Wojciechowski, and his caregivers: Deb, Joyce, Brenda, Jennifer, and Bonnie.

A private graveside service has been held. Dunn Funeral Home assisted with arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.dunnfuneralhome.com
