Obituary for Richard L. Gilbert

Richard Lee "Dick" Gilbert of Whitehouse, Ohio went to meet the Lord peacefully July 6, 2018 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio at the age of 88, with his loving wife and family by his side. Dick was born September 30, 1929 in Toledo, Ohio to Virgil Gilbert and Ruth (Wunder) Gilbert. He grew up in Toledo, Ohio where he was a big brother to his two sisters, Jean and Carol Gilbert. He graduated from Devilbiss High School, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Toledo.
After graduation, Dick was drafted into the Marine Corps and proudly served as a Staff Sergeant during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge, he began a 30 year career at Owens Illinois in sales in the Plastic Products Division. It was there that he met the love of his life, his wife of 61 years Joan (Meyers). They were married on May 18th, 1957 and had four adoring daughters: Sheron (Joe) Benkert, Dawn (Geary) Belzung, Pamela Fugazzi, and Susan (Brooks) Burton. Dick’s career took the family to Albany, NY, Glastonbury, CT, Milford, OH, and eventually Whitehouse, OH.
After retiring from O.I., Dick started Maumee Valley Appraisal Company with his brother-in-law Jerry (Gwen) Smetzer. There he ended his working career. Dick truly enjoyed life and appreciated the arts, especially painting and drawing which he was very good at, and he enjoyed listening to jazz music. He was a former member of The Waterville Playshop, and had a memorable performance as Colonel Pickering in My Fair Lady among many other roles. Dick was a member of Hope United Methodist Church and had one time served as a Financial Trustee. Dick was also a past member of The Maumee Elks Club. He loved to play golf and tennis, and he loved travel, the Ohio State Buckeyes, sailing, and fishing. In fact, he taught his 8 cherished grandchildren how to hook a fish in his backyard lake. Brittany (Josh) Rose, Westin Huggler, Kendall Huggler, Ashley (Garrett) Belzung, Graham Fugazzi, Chandler Burton, Brooks Burton Jr., and Cydney Fugazzi, all credit Papa with their fishing abilities. He also was a loving, great grand-Papa to Callan, Cohen, and Hadley Joan. Dick was loved by his sisters-in-law Janet (Hugh) Wilson, and Gwen (Jerry) Smetzer, as well as his 5 nieces and 4 nephews. Family was without a doubt the most important thing to him. He was an incredibly devoted and supportive husband, brother, father, and Papa. His greatest contribution was the impact he had on all who met him. He was exceptionally kind, funny, caring, generous, and strong. He was preceded in death by his parents. The family would like to thank Linda and Carol his constant, loving caregivers, and Angie and Tessa, and his other hospice angels.
