Obituary for Alice Saunders

Alice J. (Shelly) Saunders passed away peacefully on October 8, 2018 at home with family at her bedside. A lifelong resident of the Toledo area, she had been most recently residing at The Waterford in Perrysburg.
Alice was born on January 29, 1924 to Charles S. and Helen (Russell) Shelly in Toledo. She attended Harvard Grade School and graduated from Libbey High School in 1942. Alice worked for many years at BGSU in the administrative offices before retiring.
She wed the love of her life, John P. Saunders, in 1947. They were married for 56 years before John’s passing in 2003. John and Alice were dedicated deeply to one another and shared a rich life. They had many friends with whom they socialized and traveled. Through the years they enjoyed the occasional cocktail and golf outings both in Toledo and Florida. Alice took tremendous pride in John’s World War II service and all others who served. She was valued by John for her support and critiques when he wrote Mary Worth, Steve Roper and Dateline Danger comic strips.
No tribute to Alice would be complete without mentioning her love and skill for golf. Alice loved the game and played well into her 80’s. Her skill is unquestioned with four holes in one made over the years at Valleywood (Holes 4 and 17) and Royal Palm (Holes 7 and 14). Quite the achievement!
To the dismay of many family members and friends Alice was an avid Michigan Wolverine fan.
Alice’s strength and independence were inspirational to many that knew her. Her quick wit won many friends and admirers over the years. Left to cherish her memory are her cousin Russell (Kay) Robertson, Brother-in-law David (Charlotte) Saunders, Sisters-in-law Penelope Carson and Lois Morgan and special Nephew Matthew (Cheryl) Carson along with many more nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by two adored brothers, Charles R. Shelly and Sumner P. Shelly.
Services will be private with her cousin Scott Robertson officiating. There will be no visitation. Alice will be interred next to her husband John in Waterville. Special thanks to the caring staff of The Waterford and Southern Care Hospice.
Anyone wishing to honor Alice’s life should consider a donation to the Anthony Wayne Band Boosters, P.O. Box 2753, Whitehouse, OH 43571. Arrangements have been entrusted to Peinert-Dunn Funeral Homes, Whitehouse, Ohio. To share an online condolence with Alice's family, please visit www.dunnfuneralhome.com
