Obituary for Bernard Utz

Bernard Marion Utz 1925-2018
Son of Neva and Marion Utz, born and raised on the family farm in Waterville Township, Bernard M. Utz lived almost his whole life there until his passing at age 93 at Browning Masonic Home, with family at his side. He served his country in World War II, having fought with Army combat troops in the Asiatic Pacific Theater where he was wounded and for which he was later awarded a Purple Heart.
After his honorable discharge, Bernie joined his dad on the farm, producing field crops and apples and peaches. He met his love-of-life and future wife, Vonnie, at a dance in Bowling Green. Together they raised six daughters. Bernie, as most farmers, had to be more than a jack-of-all-trades. His favorite interest was metalworking and he engineered many unique and helpful tools or machinery modifications – not the least of which was his “apple picker”, the 55 gal. drum he worked into the tractor’s front end loader hydraulics that allowed him to stay up in the fruit trees picking or pruning, operating the tractor from up there. He took out the orchards in 1976 (partially retiring) – a sad time for Utz apple and cider fans! He continued farming field crops until he fully retired in 1991. After that, he joined his wife in volunteering at St. Luke’s Hospital for many years.
Bernie loved his home, loved the river scenery they were lucky to view every day, loved being with his family. Over the years, he filled his spare time with bowling, daily walks around the farm and on the tow path behind their home, reading, and tinkering in his shop. He and Vonnie loved to dance and did so into their 80s. They had many great friends with whom they not only enjoyed playing cards but travelled often in the States and abroad. He had been a past member of Farm Bureau Council and also served as a Waterville Township trustee and Ohio Citizens Bank trustee. He was a lifelong member of Waterville United Methodist Church. His impatience (maybe especially with his girls) became his trademark and family joke, as well as the nickname “Steve Stunning”, bestowed upon him for his ability to put together a sharp outfit. His infectious laughter, dry and witty humor kept us all in stitches. When he became infirm, what he missed most was that he could not drive his tractors or his car anymore, although he did mow his lawn on his zero-turn probably longer than he should have! Yet, he never complained.
Bernie is survived by his six daughters: Cheryl Mann (Fred) of Waterville; Mary Beth McCormick (Randy) of Sylvania; Teri Bersée (Jim) of Fennville, MI; Patti Wright (Jeff) of Grand Rapids; Lori Utz (Roy Huffer) of Columbus; and Peggy Cadaret (Ralph) of Lambertville, MI; seventeen grandchildren; nineteen (and counting) great grandchildren; sister Marilyn Butler (Richard) of Dahlonega GA, and 2 nieces; he was predeceased by his wife Vonnie and great grandson, Eli Bersée.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 7, 2018 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Peinert-Dunn Funeral Home, 7220 Dutch Rd. Waterville, Ohio. His funeral service will be held on Monday, October 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Waterville United Methodist Church, 102 N 5th St., Waterville, Ohio. Interment will follow at Wakeman Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Heartland Hospice or The St. Luke’s Hospital Foundation.
P.S. Bernie and Vonnie celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary together last October 12, so Bernie timed this well.....they will still celebrate their 71st together! Love you, Babe! To share an online condolence with the Utz family, please visit
