Obituary for Rachel Ann Rankin Plymale

Rachel Ann Rankin Plymale, 84, of Whitehouse, Ohio, died December 30, 2018 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Maumee, Ohio surrounded by her family. She was born November 16, 1934 in Des Moines, IA to Dr. William and Mary (Irwin) Rankin, Sr. She graduated from Marietta High School in 1954 and was a proud 1956 graduate of The Ohio State University College of Nursing. She worked for several years then used her nursing education to raise her family, while volunteering her nursing skills in the schools, public health and her church. After her children were raised, Rachel worked as a Registered Nurse at senior care centers.

She married the love of her life, Charles E. Plymale in August of 1956. He called her The Queen and he was her Charlemagne. He survives along with their daughter, Becky (Bruce) of Butler, PA, sons Charles (Kim) and Clark (Laurie), both of Monclova. Also surviving are her beloved grandchildren CJ (Alicia) Plymale, Melissa (Chris) Zorn, Mariah (Jay) Persinger, Josh Walker and Eric Walker, as well as 7 great grandchildren. Also surviving are her brother Robert (Judy) Rankin of Myrtle Beach SC and sister in law Barbara Rankin of Marietta, Ohio. Rachel was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her brother Dr. William Clark Rankin, Jr.

Rachel loved life but more than anything she loved her family. She could be seen sitting on the sidelines of many a game for her children, grandchildren or great grands. Her meatballs were legendary in family circles. Rachel was an avid Ohio State fan, attending numerous OSU football games over the years. They went to 18 consecutive Rose Bowl parades. After 36 years as a city girl, Rachel and Chick moved to a farm in Monclova. She adapted by raising up to 100 lambs a year and learning plenty about tractors and the country life. Chick and Rachel traveled extensively over the years, exploring Japan, Ireland, Switzerland, Panama, Alaska and California to name just a few of her favorites. When not traveling or supporting her family, Rachel loved to read and enjoyed many kinds of music. She sang with her church choir for many years and loved to play the dulcimer or attend the symphony. Rachel was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Maumee for 60 years, volunteering in a wide variety of capacities.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 4, 2019 from 3-8 pm at Peinert-Dunn Funeral Home, 6603 Providence St., Whitehouse, OH. Rachel’s funeral service will be Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church of Maumee, 200 E. Broadway St., Maumee. Burial will follow at Roth Cemetery in Monclova, OH. Memorial contributions can be given to First Presbyterian Church of Maumee, to support the church’s music program, one of her great joys.
