Obituary for John Ryan

John P. Ryan (b. 1951) passed away in his home in Waterville, Ohio on December 31, 2017 after a long battle with cancer. John was the youngest son of the late Margaret (McTague) and Frank Ryan of Streator Illinois, and beloved husband to Geraldine (Labuz), his wife of 43 years. He is survived by his wife and three children: Patrick (Jennifer), Angela Ferguson (Paul), and David, and four cherished grandchildren: Abigail Ryan, William Ryan, Caitlin Ferguson, and John “Jack” Ferguson. He is also survived by his two brothers Michael (Trish) and James (Sue), and many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

A graduate of Benedictine University (Class of 1973) and Michigan State University (Class of 1977), John’s life work was protecting people. He was a decorated police officer with the Aurora Police Department in Illinois starting in 1973 before joining Owens Corning in 1985, where he was the Director of Global Security, responsible for the security of the company’s facilities worldwide. He was recognized for his contributions to industrial security by both the FBI and the DEA, and was a certified protection professional (CPP) and a certified fraud examiner (CFE). He was also the chairman of the Toledo Chapter of the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) in 1996, and recognized multiple times for contributions to that society over more than 30 years. But, his life’s passion was his family, and he was immensely proud of all of his children and grandchildren, and doted on them all his life. John will be remembered for his quick wit, and deep sense of humor. At large family parties, or just out with friends, John would have everyone laughing – but at nobody’s expense. He was a lover of cinema, especially westerns, and could name the most obscure actor and several other films they appeared in, typically to the amazement of all within earshot. He was a sports fan and loved cold beer with friends at Mud Hen’s games, the Cubs on TV, friendly football rivalries throughout the Big Ten, and he pulled for the Chicago Bears until the end. He also loved California red wine and art of many forms, including the theater, symphony, and opera. He found his own artistic expression through hand-painting miniature military soldiers, and those pieces will always be treasured by his children. John had a strong and positive influence on everyone he met, and his family will be forever grateful for the time with him, though too short.

There will be an Irish wake for John at Shawn’s Irish Tavern in Waterville, Ohio on Thursday, Jan 4th from 5pm until closing. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, Jan 6that 9:30 am, at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Schaumburg, Illinois, with reception to follow at a location to be announced. Interment will be private, at St. Adalbert’s Catholic Cemetery in Niles, Illinois.

John’s wish was for any donations or memorials to be made, in lieu of flowers, to The University of Michigan’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, specifically for their music and art program for children. Please designate to the Child and Family Life Program #212568, with Tribute to John P. Ryan.
