Obituary for Dr. Richard D. Hoare

Dr. Richard David Hoare, 90, a professor emeritus of Geology at Bowling Green State University, passed away March 27, 2018 at his home in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Richard was born in Rosiclare, Illinois, on May 14, 1927 to Bertram J. and Bess (Wright) Hoare. He graduated from Rock Island High School in Illinois in 1945 and soon after was drafted into the United States Army. He served in the occupation army in Bad Tolz, Germany and Austria until 1947. Using the G.I. Bill, he enrolled in Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois and received his B.S. He then enrolled in the graduate program in Geology at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri receiving a Masters Degree and then went on to get his Doctorate in 1957. During that time, he was an instructor at the University of Missouri and also taught at their department field camps in Wyoming.

While attending college he worked four summers for the Alaskan Branch of the U.S. Geological Survey and one summer for the Cartier Mining Company, a subsidiary of U.S. Steel in Quebec.

Richard came to Bowling Green State University in 1957 and taught in the Department of Geology. He was chairman of the Geology Department from 1967 to 1978. He found teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses were enjoyable and he interjected his fieldwork experience and research efforts into his lectures. Believing that a doctorate degree signified a research obligation to the university, he spent a significant portion of his time researching and teaching in the studies of Paleozoic invertebrates. Over 100 publications were authored or coauthored on collections from Ohio and many other areas in the U.S., Europe, Argentina, Malaysia, Australia, and Japan. There have been three different species named after him.

He also was selected as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1984-1988. He then returned to the department to teach until he retired in 1990. With the continuing generous support of the Department of Geology, he was able to continue his research until 2010. He was awarded the Mather Medal Award by the Ohio Geological Survey in 2002 for his extensive work on fossils in Ohio. The Alumni Association of B.G.S.U. awarded him as an Honorary Alumni in 2004.

He was a member of the Paleontological Society, and was the Managing Editor of the Journal of Paleontology for three years and then as the Technical Editor for many years; the Paleontological Society of London; a Fellow of the Ohio Academy of Science; American Legion; and the Weston Church of Christ.

In August of 2012 he had the privilege of being on the Honor Flight to fly to Washington, DC to pay tribute the World War II Memorial accompanied by his son, Bradley. Dick enjoyed many things – he was an avid reader and shared his love of books with his friends, being outdoors and spending time at the lake cottage with family and friends to continuing his passion of finding fossils. He also enjoyed painting landscapes and abstract art with watercolors, chalk, and oils. He enjoyed working with wood making tables, bookcases, and toys but found his passion of turning the wood into many beautiful wooden bowls.

He is survived by his wife Mary Ann Hoare (Goodman) whom he married on December 19, 1971 and son, Bradley (Elizabeth Vanderhoef) Hoare of Belding, MI; as well as Thomas (Susan) Hoane, of Fuquay Varina, NC; Stephen (Kay) Hoane, of Findlay, OH; and Michael (Lisa) Hoane, of Herrin, IL from his previous marriage to Roselea Tate, nine grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Three brothers, Bertram, George, Joseph and a sister Margaret, a grandson, and a nephew preceded him in death.

Visitation will be held on Monday April 2, 2018 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Dunn Funeral Home, located in the Historical District of Bowling Green at 408 West Wooster St.

His funeral service will be held on Tuesday April 3, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Gary Wackler will officiate. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Bowling Green where full military honors will be rendered by the Wood County Honor Detail.

Memorial contributions may be given in his memory to the Richard D. Hoare Graduate Research Support Fund or the Weston Church of Christ.
