Obituary for Salvatore "Sal" Barone

Salvatore (Sal) Barone, 78, of Defiance, Ohio passed away Friday, July 13, 2018 at Toledo Hospital after a brief illness. He is survived by his children Salvador Barone and Genevieve Wilson; life partner Patricia Ross; son-in-law Adam Wilson; grandchildren Mia and Salvador Barone Jr and Judah and Imogen Wilson; his sister, Virginia Cataldo; seven nephews and three nieces. He married Elizabeth Pinky Dapogny in 1979, and they remained friends throughout Sal’s lifetime.

Sal was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 26, 1939 to Antonio and Angelina (Camporealo) Barone who immigrated to the United States from Palermo, Sicily. The youngest of seven children, Sal was preceded in death by his parents and by his brothers Peter, Albert, Francis, Joseph and Anthony.

His first job was working at the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street. Sal was an entrepreneur and craftsman. He used his technical and artistic skills over the course of four decades in his business, Baron Designs, to design and manufacture functional and decorative pieces from Lucite plastic. Among his clients were the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, photographer André Kertész and Sauder Woodworking Company.

While living in Manhattan, Sal became interested in making and flying kites. He won third place in the Central Park Hand Built Kite Flying Contest in 1992. He brought his love of kite flying to the wide open spaces of NW Ohio when he moved to Bowling Green, testing and perfecting many kite designs on the intramural fields at BGSU.

Sal also ran country-western dance classes and a dancing venue in Bowling Green, where his natural talent and graceful moves were admired. He met his sweetheart,
Pat Ross, in 1998 through their mutual interest in country dancing. For many years, Sal and Pat danced every weekend in Defiance and the surrounding area.

In retirement, he continued to enjoy cooking and began the new hobby of playing cards with Pat and friends. He was always described as being younger than his years.
