Obituary for Anita Kay Myers

Anita Kay Myers, aged 57, passed away while embraced by her loving family at home in Swanton, Ohio, on September 3, 2018 after a brave fight with cancer. She was born to Carl and Ruth Turner in McDowell, Kentucky, who later moved to Waterville, Ohio in 1963.
Anita and Jim, her husband of thirty-eight years, were high school sweethearts. After they married, they built their home together in Swanton, Ohio. Over the years, they raised two sons, Daniel and Donald, and loved countless dogs and cats. Anita, who was called “the rock” of the family, was always there to help family, friends, and even strangers, who needed information, guidance, or an advocate.
Anita worked as an office manager at Broadway Litho, a printing company in Toledo, Ohio, for twenty years. After the birth of her youngest son, Donald, who was born with a heart condition, Anita and Jim found there was a void of information and advocacy for families of children dealing with heart conditions. To help others, Anita and Jim founded CHASER, Inc., a support and education group for families and caregivers of children with congenital heart defects. Through CHASER, Anita touched the lives of thousands of people throughout all 50 states and 20 different countries. No matter what time families would call in need of information or someone to talk to, even in the middle of the night, Anita would take the call and provide comfort and information. CHASER and advocacy would become a full-time commitment for her.
Anita’s drive and devotion was unceasing. She volunteered countless hours driving to Columbus, and attending meetings as the chairperson for the State of Ohio’s Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps—Parent Advisory Committee, where she advocated for the medical and insurance needs of children with disabilities across the state. In recent years, she was a regular at the Swanton voting precinct as a captain and judge for the Lucas County Board of Elections, ensuring fair elections.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Myers; sons, Daniel (Ashley) Myers, and Donald (Jennifer) Myers; grandchild, William Myers, with another grandchild on the way; parents, Carl and Ruth Turner; brother, Alan (Cindy) Turner; sister, Lana (Brian) Scott; her special niece, Erin Scott; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2018 from 3-8pm at Peinert-Dunn Funeral Home – Whitehouse Chapel, 6603 Providence Street, Whitehouse, Ohio 43571. Funeral Services for Anita will take place at Hope United Methodist Church, 10610 Waterville Street, Whitehouse, OH 43571, on Friday, September 7, 2018, at 11am, presided over by Pastor Tom Hoover.
Memorial donations should be sent to the “Mott Save A Heart Campaign Fund” at the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan ( and to Hope United Methodist Church.
