Obituary for Vondale M. Utz

Vondale Mary (Smith) Utz, age 92, of Waterville, Ohio, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 11 in the presence of her loving family. Vonnie was born August 19, 1925 to Earl and Hilda (Carnicom) Smith in Rudolph, Ohio.

During World War II, Vonnie contributed to the war effort by working at the Rossford Ordinance. After the war, she met her future husband, Bernard M. Utz, at a dance in Bowling Green. They married on October 12, 1947. Fortunate to have lived together so long, they were totally devoted to each other…theirs was a true love story. After marrying, the couple raised six daughters with humor and hard work on the family farm where Vonnie sorted thousands of bushels of apples and peaches, put up cider, and tended the market. She ran a tight ship and kept a tidy home. Vonnie was famous for her delicious homemade apple pies which we are sure she could have made in her sleep, to the delight of friends and family.
She was known to many as a kind, sweet, generous lady, and her family adored her as a great, loving, and supportive wife, mother, sister, aunt, and grandma.

Vonnie was a long-time member and strong supporter of Waterville United Methodist Church, donating hours of time cooking, baking and knitting for fundraising efforts. She was a great neighbor and always found it in her heart to help care for ailing neighbors and relatives. Somehow she still found time to sew many clothes and knit sweaters for her growing daughters and grandkids, all of whom she was so very proud.

Vonnie and Bernie loved to dance and also enjoyed playing cards and traveling the world with their many friends. Once they retired from farming, Vonnie selflessly volunteered at St. Luke’s Hospital for over twenty-five years.

Vonnie is survived by her husband of 70 years, Bernard M. Utz, daughters Cheryl (Fred) Mann, Mary Beth (Randy) McCormick, Teri (Jim) Bersée, Patti (Jeff) Wright, Lori Hilfinger (Roy Huffer), and Peggy(Ralph) Cadaret, seventeen grandchildren, and twenty-one (and counting) great-grandchildren, sister Dorothy Adams. She was preceded in death by sister Florabelle Thompson, brother Earl D. Smith, and great-grandson Eli Bersée.

Visitation will be held Thursday, March 15, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Peinert-Dunn Funeral Home, 7220 Dutch Road, Waterville, Ohio. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2018 at the Waterville United Methodist Church, 102 North Fifth Street Waterville, Ohio with burial following at Wakeman Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions to either Heartland Hospice or the church.
